Close-grained north polar pine “kontio”

Slowly grown close-grained northern wood is the best material for construction. Pine grows on a dry and nutrient-poor soil, such as sand and morainic soils, but it also thrives in a stony and rocky ground. Its growth zone covers the whole northern hemisphere. This arctic wood species needs plenty of light and clean air in order to grow healthy. Northern Finland offers all these geological and climatic characteristics better than any other region in the world. KONTIO only uses genuine northern pine in its buildings.






A house built from durable Kontio log is warm and safe. Log is easy to work and it maintains its structural integrity for decades. A log construction breathes and agreeably evens out indoor moisture and temperature. Thanks to this, the construction also offers affordable heat costs. Log as a construction material only gets better with time and will preserve the value of the building for centuries. Designs focused on sustainable architecture, planning based on customer needs and strict attention to quality are the competitive weapons Kontio uses now and will use in the future as well. 

Log House Building is an Ecological Process

Forest preservation is taken very seriously in Finland. Caution is applied in cutting down trees and deforestation furthering erosion is out of question. Emphasis is put on assuring supply by natural rejuvenation and afforestation with almost 150 million seedlings per year. In raw material sourcing, Kontio uses forest of to the Finnish State Forest Enterprise, which has obtained the PEFC label (Program for the Endorsement of Forest Certification).
Having own complete computer-controlled semi and fully automatic receiving station, design, production and drying lines, full quality control, Kontio reach high quality of products with a minimum waste. Bark and sawdust generated at the saw are used as fuel at heat stations; chips are processed at the paper mills.
In timber exploitation for a Kontio log house, only 1/15 of energy is needed in comparison to that needed for a comparable house built in a conventional style.

Quality Certificates for Kontio Log Houses and Constructions

The triple AAA rating issued by D&B reflects the financial strength and reliability of the company.
In addition to several patents and certificates, Kontio has received the CE certificate, proving that Kontio houses comply with the demands of the European technical approval ETA-05/0119. The certificate is valid throughout Europe and ensures the quality of Kontio products. The certificate is also helpful for obtaining financing, insurance and permits needed in building.
